CPS:

Abbreviation of Characters Per Second, a unit of measure used to describe the speed of dot-matrix and daisy-wheel printers. The speed of laser and ink-jet printers is described in terms of pages per minute (ppm).

Dot Matrix Printers:

This type of printer produces characters and illustrations by striking pins against an ink ribbon to print closely spaced dots in the appropriate shape. Dot matrix printers can print to multi-page forms.

Dot-matrix printers vary in two important characteristics:
    • speed: Given in characters per second (cps), the speed can vary from about 50 to over 500 cps. Most dot-matrix printers offer different speeds depending on the quality of print desired.
    • print quality: Determined by the number of pins (the mechanisms that print the dots), it can vary from 9 to 24.

Impact printers:

Another name for dot matrix printers. Okidata ML series (microline series) printers are all impact printers (ML320, ML320 Turbo, etc.)

Microline printers:

Abbreviated as "ML" printers, microline printers are dot matrix impact printers. Examples are the microline 320 (now replaced by the microline 320 turbo), the ML395 (microline 395), etc.

Non impact printers:

Printers which do not physically strike the paper.Oki Data okipage printers and okicolor printers are all non impact printers. Non impact printers are also called laser printers or LED printers.

Oki, Oki Data, and Okidata:

Oki Data is the actual company name. The other two are used interchangably to identify and represent the manufacturer of Oki Data printers.

PPM:

Stands for Pages Per Minute and is used to measure the speed of certain types of printers, particularly laser printers.

Wide format printers and wide format laser printers:

Printers that print to a larger size paper than the standard 8 1/2 by 11 inches - also called tabloid printers. All Oki Data LED color laser printers in the C9000 Series such as the C9200 and C9400 printers are wide format printers.
